Be sure to look out for the Moon these next few months as it approaches Perigee, because the full moons during these times will appear exceptionally large. The Moon will be at its Perigee, or closest approach, in July 23 and it will reach full moon only a few minutes after it passes this point in its orbit.

These ‘super moons’ not only appear larger because they are physically closer but, combined with a full moon, the mind can play tricks on you to think they are much larger. This phenomena is called the Moon Illusion. Try to catch these full moons as they rise/set because the illusion works when there is an object in the foreground, like a tree, building or mountains.

This unusual fencing dagger demonstrates the way in which the artistic qualities of a weapon could be influenced by the practical concerns of the swordsman. The Renaissance duel was usually fought with rapier and dagger. The rapier, as the main weapon of attack, was complemented by a parrying dagger held in the left hand, used primarily for defensive movements.

However, by 1600 fighting with the rapier alone was becoming the latest fashion. The opposing blade could still be parried or beaten away with the left hand. The free left also allowed the duellist to grab hold of his enemy’s swordblade, temporarily immobilising it to expose him to a lethal counter-thrust.

This distinctive fencing weapon is designed to provide the blade-grabbing ability of the free left hand, while retaining the dagger for defensive action. The arrow-like barbs allowed a sword blade to enter the ‘jaw’ of the dagger, but made it difficult to free it again. With his weapon ensnared, the enemy was exposed, if only for an instant.

The practical challenges of creating such a specialised weapon were considerable. The hardened and tempered steel blade had to be carefully cut with the series of dramatically barbed teeth, a laborious process. The spaces between the teeth have been elegantly filed with ornamental edges, while the base of the blade has been finely etched and gilt- an unusual feature, even for high-quality weapons. In this way, despite its very specific function as a fighting tool, the weapon’s artistic merit is evident.

I feel really lucky that the guys that run Atlas Comics never treated me this way. Or Velocity in Richmond for that matter. So I’ve had the chance to listen to the entirety of the new Daft Punk album, and I must say, it’s fan-fucking-tastic. Better than anything else they’ve ever done. If you’re a fan, get it as soon as it comes out. Everything about it is so well thought out and produced and written. It makes other EDM look like a fucking joke. Though, while Human After All was very mechanical, more robotic, this one is way more human and disco. So if you weren’t big on their funkier side, you may not care for it.

Personally, I think they manage to blend old school disco sounds with their kind of trademark robot sounds perfectly. And the end of the album, my god. It sure as shit doesn’t end on a whimper. It goes out with a fucking huge ass bang.

Get it. Don’t pirate it. Fucking BUY IT. It’s worth the $12. Come on. It comes out May 21st. Mark your fucking calendars.

This thing makes you see visions of alien planets and flashing lights, you hear angels sing and robots contemplate their existence, it’s like a scifi movie of sound. It is sexy and smooth as all get out. I just cannot describe. It’s perfect.

I listened while distracted, and it was a wonderful album. I gave it my full attention and it felt like it shook my whole world.
